"Zooming in on Virgo and its neighbouring constellations, you bring up the Virgo cluster of galaxies. It is the nearest large cluster of galaxies - about 50 million light years away. Several of the brighter members can be seen in a small telescope, though none are visible to the naked eye. The brighter galaxies, noted by the 18th century French astronomer Charles Messier, are identified by 'M' before their catalog numbers."
